"Cultivate your Neighbourhood" Connecting Kids to Community Gardening (Completed)

Cultivate Your Neighbourhood took kids on a journey from seed to plate by offering elementary school students the opportunity to plant and nurture veggies and fruit in their nearest community garden. We extend thanks to the Community Gardening Network / Food Shed for leading this project, and for helping kids gain an appreciation for the food on their plate.

The program provided:

  • Train the trainer sessions to provide peer support and increase the capacity of gardening leaders
  • Educational growing sessions for children in schools, so they could participate in neighbourhood gardens
  • The creation of a mobile toolkit to ensure sustainability of programming
  • Events for children and families at community gardens (planting days, celebrations etc.)

In total, this program reached 1912 students at 21 schools. 393 children and 499 adults participated in 7 community events. A special thank you goes out to the 19 volunteers who were trained, and who helped make this program a success.
