A Reflective piece from the Gathering Lead, Beatriz Alvarez (RECE, Inuit Liaison): The other day when I crossed the yard, I overheard a teacher asking a child to get down from a child-sized picnic table. What immediately came to my mind was "Why? Why was the child being asked to step off? What were the risks?” On further reflection, I recalled that each winter our play structure is fenced and deemed out of bounds for children for the past 3 years. Increasingly, I question decisions that adults make that take away challenges and opportunities for children to make judgments for themselves, exploring the physical world, and working toward a goal they have set for themselves.
