Choosing a school and registering your child

Choosing a school and registering your child

Parents in Greater Sudbury who are getting ready to register their child for school have a variety of choices. Four school boards serve the Greater Sudbury community. All four boards offer full day, full week programs for children starting in JK/Early Learning.

Use this Ministry of Education tool to find the schools near your home. Check out the ministry’s admission criteria for French-language schools. And, to find out which schools provide buses from your home, call the Sudbury Student Services Consortium at (705) 521-1234.

People for Education—an independent, parent-led organization—has this advice about what to look for in a school.

Registration begins in January for all children who’ll be turning four that year and beginning school the following September. Registering early will help ensure you’re invited to readiness programs offered by your school. Check out the topic titled Preparing your child for school or Preparing your child for a French-language school for additional tips. If you miss the formal registration events, you can still call the school you are interested in anytime to get your child registered.

If your child has special needs, you may want to start preparing for school even earlier. The Planning Network for Sudbury Families has produced this brochure that outlines the steps and timelines that will help make your child’s transition to school a smooth one.
