The Healthy Kids Caterers' Challenge is on!

We challenged Greater Sudbury restaurants and caterers to help us help kids eat better, one meal at a time!

The Healthy Kids Community Challenge will be showcasing nutritious, affordable and balanced dishes that kids will love to eat at our upcoming Healthy Kids Snow Day on February 6, 2016. Our finalists will be serving free “taster” servings of their dish, from 11 am until they are gone.

Children will have the opportunity to provide feedback about each dish (and this information can be shared back with caterers, if interested).

Our hope is that featured Healthy Kids dishes will be added to your catering menus and available to be ordered for school lunch programs, special events and even family takeout

Our Finalists

We are pleased to be welcoming two local caterers as finalists in the Challenge with their Healthy Kids approved dishes:

Coopérative Boréal- Hearty Vegetarian Chili

Tucos Tacos- Loaded Sunflower Seed Tacos

We will also be serving free nutritious snacks and beverages as well as traditional foods provided by Shkagamik-Kwe Health Centre.

What makes a dish Healthy Kids approved?

A full serving must include at least one full Food Guide serving of vegetables or fruit;

If the Meat & Meat Alternatives Food Group is included, meat alternatives (e.g., beans, chickpeas, pulses or lentils) are highlighted.

The dish must also:

Use only whole grain ingredients (if used);

Contain less than 720 mg sodium per (full) serving.

About the Healthy Kids Community Challenge

The Healthy Kids Community Challenge is Ontario’s new drive to support the health of our children and Greater Sudbury has been chosen to be a part of it. That means new ideas and programs are coming to our community – things that make it easier for children to be active and eat healthier. These are key components to good health through adulthood.
